Italy were hot favourites to win as they could potentially field three of the top four fencers in the world. The Italians suffered a setback when [Diana Bianchedi] was forced to pull out after being injured in the individual event. Her replacement, [Francesca Bortolozzi-Borella], struggled in the semi-final against Hungary but the rest of the team were able to scrape out a 45-42 victory.
Italy’s opponents in the final were Romania who fielded individual gold medallist Laura Badea but lacked the depth of talent that the Italians had to offer. The Italian trio completed an easy victory to claim the Olympic title.
