Summary

Sergey Bubka was again favored, having won the last five World Championships. But he had an Achilles' injury and withdrew after warming up for the qualifying. That left the competition wide-open. The medals were decided at 5.92 (19-5) when only three vaulters cleared – Jean Galfione (FRA) and Igor Trandenkov (RUS) on the first attempt, and German Andrej Tiwontschik on his second attempt. Galfione took one attempt at 5.97 (19-7), failing, and then passed to 6.02 (19-9) where he was joined by Trandenkov and Tivontchik, but nobody cleared that height. Trandenkov won his second consecutive silver medal. Galfione won the gold medal over Trandenkov based on fewer total misses.
