Summary

Michael Johnson was the favorite, having won the 1993 and 1995 World Championships, Harry "Butch" Reynolds finishing second both times. They were two-thirds of the American team, with Alvin Harrison taking the third spot. Johnson's only loss in the event since 1989 was the 1992 Olympics, when food poisoning weakened him and he did not make the final. Running in the final wearing gold shoes, Johnson defeated Britain's Roger Black, 1986 and 1990 European Champion, by almost 10 metres, the largest margin of victory in the event since the 1896 Olympics, when things were a bit different. Reynolds was injured in Atlanta and did not finish his semi-final.
