American Kenny Monday was the defending gold medalist and had won the 1989 World Championships, he was only considered a slight favorite, as he had not been as strong since 1989. Iranian Amir Reza Khadem Azgadhi was the 1991 World Champion and also thought to be a contender. Khadem Azgadhi met Korean Park Jang-Sun in the final of Group A, with Park narrowly winning the group, 2-1 on points. Park met Monday in the gold medal match which was very close. It was scoreless for most of the match when Monday attacked with 15 seconds only to see Park counter and score a 1-point takedown, which brought him the gold medal, 1-0. Park and Monday would both compete again in 1996 at Atlanta, with Park winning a silver medal and Monday placing sixth. Khadem Azgadhi won the bronze medal in Barcelona, defeating Unified Team Azerbaijani Məmmədsalam Haciyev, also winning 1-0.
