Summary

İslam Duquçiyev, an Azerbaijani wrestling for the Unified Team. had won the last two World Champions and was considered a favorite. Another contender was Hungarian Attila Repka, the 1988-89 European Champion and bronze medalist at the 1990 Worlds. The two met in the final and wrestled to a scoreless tie in regulation. In the first overtime, Repka won the gold medal with a 1-point takedown at 5:38, upsetting the favored Duquçiyev. Duquçiyev would continue to win, taking the 1993-94 World titles, while Repka would win European titles in 1994 and 1996.
