Summary

Former Soviet wrestler Arsen Fadzayev was the defending gold medalist and came to Barcelona as a 6-time World Champion, and was considered the clear favorite. He won the gold medal relatively easily. He won all his matches in group competition, although a few decisions were relatively close, but in the final, against Bulgarian Valentin Getsov, Fadzayev triumphed on points, 13-1, to defend his Olympic title. The bronze went to Japan’s Kosei Akaishi who won a silver medal as a featherweight at the 1984 Olympics. Fadzayev continued competing, but for his native Uzbekistan, and was never again as good, placing 13th at the 1996 Olympics.
