Former Soviet Makharbek Khadartsev was the defending gold medalist and had won the last five World Championships. He defended his gold medal easily in group competition, then won the final with a careful victory over Turkey’s Kenan Şimşek, winning 1-0, while playing defense in the last half of the bout.
The bronze medal went to American Chris Campbell, who came a long way for that medal. He had made the 1980 Olympic team but could not compete but then won the 1981 World Championship as a middleweight. Campbell was injured in 1984 and did not make the US team and then retired. He came back in 1989 and was runner-up to Khadartsev at the 1990 Worlds. In Barcelona he was drawn against Khadartsev in the first match and lost, 7-0, but Campbell won all his remaining matches, including the bronze medal bout against Mongolian Puntsagiin Sükhbat to win his long-sought Olympic medal.
