Former Soviet [Makharbek Khadartsev] was the defending gold medalist and had won the last five World Championships. He defended his gold medal easily in group competition, then won the final with a careful victory over Turkey’s [Kenan Şimşek], winning 1-0, while playing defense in the last half of the bout.
The bronze medal went to American [Chris Campbell], who came a long way for that medal. He had made the 1980 Olympic team but could not compete but then won the 1981 World Championship as a middleweight. Campbell was injured in 1984, did not make the US team, and then retired. He came back in 1989 and was runner-up to Khadartsev at the 1990 Worlds. In Barcelona he was drawn against Khadartsev in the first match and lost, 7-0, but Campbell won all his remaining matches, including the bronze medal bout against Mongolian [Puntsagiin Sükhbat] to earn his long-sought Olympic medal.
