North Korean Kim Il-Ong had lost in the final of the 1991 World Championships to Bulgarian Vugar Orudzhov. Because wrestling does not seed the competitors they met in the first round of Group B, with Kim winning this time, 9-5. He went thru Group B undefeated and then met his Korean counterpart, Kim Jong-Sin, in the final match, which resulted in a 4-1 victory for Kim – Kim Il-Ong, that is. In 1996 he would defend his Olympic title, even though he had not been allowed to compete internationally from 1993-95, because of North Korean travel and financial restrictions. Despite his first round loss, Orudzhov went undefeated for the rest of the tournament and won the bronze medal by defeating Romanian Romica Raşovan, 2-1.
