Summary

Deng Yaping had won the 1991 World Championships, was ranked #1 in the world, and was favored, despite her diminutive height of only 1.49 4-10½]. Thru the round-robin pools and first three rounds of elimination, she won all her matches in straight games. In the final, she faced her doubles partner, [Qiao Hong. They had won the doubles gold medal two days earlier. Deng crushed Qiao, 21-6, 21-8, in the first two games of the final, but then lost her first game of the Olympics, 15-21. However, she came back from a deficit in the fourth game to secure the gold medal, 23-21. This was the ninth straight title in the Olympics or Worlds by Chinese women.
