The favorite in this class was Roberto Balado of Cuba. Balado had won the 1991 Pan American Games gold medal and was World Champion in both 1989 and 1991. He romped to the gold medal in Barcelona, winning four decisions by a combined score of 54-9. In 1993 he came back to win a third world title and Central American and Caribbean Games. Although many expected him to dominate the super-heavies as Teófilo Stevenson once had, Balado was killed in 1994 when at a train crossing, the car he was driving was struck by the train.
