The favorites were again Heike Drechsler (GDR) and defending champion Jackie Joyner-Kersee (USA). At the 1991 World Championships, JJK had again defeated Drechsler. But in Barcelona, Drechsler would get her revenge. The early leader was Ukrainian Inesa Kravets with 7.12 (23-4½) in round one. She held this until Drechsler produced the gold medal winner of 7.14 (23-5¼) in round four. Joyner-Kersee opened with 7.07 (23-2½) and was in second until Drechsler's round four jump, but held on for the bronze medal, Kravets getting silver.
