Summary

The last five major international championships in the 100 had all been won by Carl Lewis – the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games, and the 1983, 1987, and 1991 World Champinoships. But in both 1990 and 1991, Leroy Burrell (USA) was ranked as #1 in the world by Track & Field News. In 1990 he was chased by Britain’s Linford Christie, who won both the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships. Lewis, hampered by a viral infection at the Trials, only made the US team in the long jump. Burrell and Dennis Mitchell both qualified for the 100. Burrell and Christie looked on top form in the prelims, with Burrell defeating Christie 9.97 to 10.00 in the semis into a headwind. But in the final, after two false starts, Burrell started very slowly and was never in the race. Christie won fairly comfortably with a charge in the last 50 metres. Namibia’s Frank Fredericks was second, and Mitchell won the bronze medal.
