Summary

The favorite was Soviet Adlan Varayev who was the 1987 World Champion and had won the last three European titles. The best American in this class had recently been Dave Schultz, the 1983 World and 1984 Olympic Champion, who had won medals at the Worlds from 1985-87, but he had recently been surpassed in the US by Kenny Monday, who won the US Trials. Monday and Varayev both went undefeated in their groups and met for the gold medal in the final. Varayev was ahead 2-1 with 17 seconds left when Monday made a crotch lift reversal to tie the match, which went into overtime. Early in the extra period Monday grabbed Varayev in a body lock and took him down for 3 points which turned out to be the margin of victory. Monday would compete at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, winning a silver medal in 1992 and placing sixth in 1996. Varayev retired from competition after Seoul and became a coach.
