Summary

Soviet Sergey Beloglazov had won the gold medal in this class at Moskva in 1980. By the time of the Seoul Olympics he was a six-time World Champion and came to Korea as the overwhelming favorite. This was a large class and Beloglazov needed to win six matches in Group A to advance to the final, which he did with four falls and two easy decisions. He met Iran’s [Askari Mohammedian], who was just as dominant in Group B, until his final match against Bulgarian [Valentin Ivanov], narrowly defeating Ivanov, 5-4. The final was somewhat close, though Beloglazov was never in trouble, winning a 5-1 decision to earn his second Olympic gold medal. Bronze went to Korean No Gyeong-Seon, who had defeated Ivanov in the final match of Group B, and then defeated Turkey’s Ahmet Ak, bronze medalist at the 1987 Worlds and silver medalist at the 1988 Europeans, to take third place. Mohammedian won another Olympic silver medal in 1992, that time as a featherweight.
