The favorites were the 1987 World Champions, Chen Longcan and Wei Qinguang of China. They won the gold medal without losing a match, and lost only three games. In the final, they faced the Yugoslav team of Ilija Lupulesku and Zoran Primorać. This was a replay of the final of the 1987 World Championships and Chen/Wei won both matches in three games.
