Summary

Malcolm Cooper was the defending gold medalist and also won the 1986 World Championships. In the prelims, his teammate, Alister Allan, led with 1,181 to 1,180 for Cooper. But Allan struggled in the final round, and Cooper went thru with 99.3 to defend his gold medal. Soviet Kiril Ivanov was only tied for fifth after the preliminary round, but had the highest score in the final with 102.0 to move up to the bronze medal.
