French sailors Luc Pillot and Thierry Péponnet had won bronze medals in the mixed version of this class in 1984. They entered the final race well behind the Soviet Estonian twin brothers, Toomas and Tõnu Tõniste, who only had to finish relatively close to the French crew to win the gold medal. The final race was sailed in gale-like conditions but the Tõniste brothers took the lead until on the final lap, when they were blown over and capsized and were unable to finish the race, giving the gold medal to Pillot and Péponnet. Racing for Estonia, the twins would come back and win a bronze medal in the 470 class at the 1992 Olympics. The third-place American crew member Charlie McKee, would win another bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics in 49er class, racing alongside his brother, Jonathan.
