Summary

The 1983 and 1987 World Champion was Greg Foster, but he had broken his forearm shortly before the US Trials and failed to make the team. Although he had missed much of the 1985-87 seasons with injuries, defending gold medalist Roger Kingdom was back, having recovered his form, being undefeated in the early 1988 season. He was expected to be challenged by the silver and bronze medalists from the 1987 Worlds, Britain’s Jon Ridgeon and Colin Jackson. But the final was no contest. Kingdom ran 12.98, only the second time below 13 seconds at low-altitude, to defend his Olympic title and won by three metres over Jackson.
