The two top women’s archery nations since 1979 were Korea and the Soviet Union. Having swept the medals in the individual event, Korea was expected to win the women’s team event easily. They won the ranking round by a huge margin. In the final round, both the United States and unheralded Indonesian team outshot the Soviet Union, and tied with 952 points for the other two medals. In a shoot-out, Indonesia defeated the USA 72-67 for the silver medal. The Korean women’s gold medal started their Olympic winning streak in this event, which remained intact through the 2012 Olympics.
