Summary

The 1983 World Champion was Finland’s Hannu Lahtinen, who came in as the favorite. However, he lost his first match to Japan’s Seiichi Osanai and lost later to Egyptian Salem Bekhit, and Lahtinen was eliminated and was not classified. The final came down to Korean Kim Won-Gi against Sweden’s Kent-Olle Johansson. The match was quite dull, although close, with Kim winning the match in which no points were scored, taking the gold medal on tie-breaking criteria. Bronze went to Switzerland’s Hugo Dietsche, who defeated American Abdurrahim Kuzu on points, 8-4.
