Summary

The medals were still in doubt after six races. American skipper [William Earl Buchan] started very poorly in the final race, but when a wind shift hit, his boat picked up speed and he shot past the leaders to win the seventh race, their third race win, and the gold medal. The Italians appeared to be headed for victory but missed a mark and had to reverse course to go around the buoy. Buchan’s son, [William Carl Buchan], also won a gold medal in Los Angeles in the Flying Dutchman class.
