There was a slight change in the format of the apparatus events in 1984 as eight gymnasts (previously six) qualified for the final round from the team qualifying, still with a maximum of two gymnasts per team. American Bart Conner specialized on the parallel bars, winning the 1979 World Championships gold medal. He won the gold medal in Los Angeles over Japan’s [Nobuyuki Kajitani] and American Mitch Gaylord. In 1996 Conner married Nadia Comăneci, the Romanian gymnastics star of the 1976 Olympics who had defected in 1991.
