Summary

There was a slight change in the format of the apparatus events in 1984 as eight gymnasts (previously six) qualified for the final round from the team qualifying, still with a maximum of two gymnasts per team. China’s Li Ning and Lou Yun were tied after the team qualifying with 19.85, but Li’s perfect 10 in the final round brought him the gold medal. This was one of three apparatus golds he won in Los Angeles, adding golds on the rings and pommelled horse. He later opened a sportswear company in his native China, became quite wealthy, and was chosen to light the Olympic Flame at the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The bronze medal was shared by Japan’s Koji Sotomura and France’s Philippe Vatuone. Vatuone’s bronze was the only medal won in 1984 by a male gymnast not from China, Japan, or the United States.
