With the Soviet Union and the GDR not competing, there was really nobody to challenge the United States, who had placed three runners in the 400 metre final. There were only 10 teams entered so the heats served only to eliminate two squads. In the final, the US won easily by 30 metres over Canada, breaking the Olympic record set by the GDR in 1980.
