The US team had the fastest time in the heats and semi-finals. But in the semis, Walter McCoy ran a few steps in the wrong lane and a protest was lodged. But it was deemed unintentional and as it did not impeded other runners, the protest was not allowed. The final was very close on the first leg with five teams within a few metres of each other. Australia took the lead on the second leg when Darren Clark ran 43.86, although Ray Armstead ran 43.97 for the US. On the third leg, the open 400 gold medalist, Alonzo Babers, ran 43.75 to open up the race and Antonio McKay held the lead on the anchor as the US won by 10 metres.
