Summary

The Soviet boycott cost the field only one top hurdler, Thomas Munkelt (GDR), the 1980 gold medalist and European Champion in 1978 and 1982. But it is unlikely he would have been a factor for the gold medal. The favorite was 1983 World Champion Greg Foster. The best hurdler since 1980 had been Renaldo Nehemiah, world record holder with 12.98 set in 1981, but he had turned to professional football and was not eligible to compete. Foster ran 13.24 in the heats to equal the Olympic record but that mark was tied in the semi-final by American Roger Kingdom. In the final, Foster took the lead by the second hurdle, but Kingdom pulled even at the eighth hurdle, and won the gold medal by inches.
