In 1976 Bulgaria’s Aleksandar Tomov had been heavily favored but lost the gold medal to Soviet Oleksandr Kolchynskiy. By 1980 Tomov was not as dominant as he had been in 1973-76, but he had won the 1979 World and European Championships, with Kolchynskiy winning Worlds in 1978 and the World Cup in 1980. They made the final round, both with 0.0 bad points, where they faced Lebanon’s Hassan Bechara. Tomov had already thrown Bechara in round four and Kolchynskiy defeated him by fall in the finals. Tomov and Kolchynskiy then met for the gold medal, with Kolchynskiy defending his Olympic title on a 4-2 decision. This was the third consecutive silver medal in this class for Tomov. Bechara had also competed at the 1968 and 1972 Olympics, but without placing.
