In his absence the gold medal went to Aleksandr Melentyev who broke Minder’s record with 581. This was likely the most dominating Olympic shooting victory in the modern era (post-World War II), as Melentyev defeated Harald Vollmar (GDR) by 13 points. Vollmar repeated his silver medal from Montréal.
