Summary

The 1978 World Champion and the world record holder with 577 with Switzerland’s Moritz Minder but he was not in Moskva because of the American-led boycott. In his absence the gold medal went to Aleksandr Melentyev who broke Minder’s record with 581. This was likely the most dominating Olympic shooting victory in the modern era (post-World War II), as Melentyev defeated Harald Vollmar (GDR) by 13 points. Vollmar repeated his silver medal from Montréal.
