Irina Kalinina (URS) was favored and would have been even without the boycott. She had won this event at the 1975 and 1978 World Championships and also won platform in 1978. Her biggest competitors in 1980 would have been American Cynthia Potter and China's Chen Xiaoxia, but both were boycotted out.
Kalinina confirmed her favorite's status, winning the gold medal quite comfortably. Swimming World noted that she put on a "good, but not great, exhibition", as she struggled with her seventh (back 2½ tuck), ninth (inward 2½ tuck), and tenth (back 1½ with 2½ twists) dives in the final. Behind her two East German divers won the other medals, silver going to Martina Proeber in her only Olympic appearance, and bronze to Karin Guthke.
