Venue(s): Grand Arena, Central Lenin Stadium Area, Moskva
Date Started: July 28, 1980
Date Finished: July 30, 1980

Silver: URS Nataliya Bochina
Bronze: JAM Merlene Ottey-Page

[Marita Koch] (GDR) had set three world records in 1978-79, but elected to compete only in the 400 in Moskva. The 1978 European Champion had been [Lyudmila Kondratyeva] (USSR) who had already won the 100 in Moskva, but withdrew from the 200 because of injuries she had sustained in that event. The top American was [Evelyn Ashford], who had won the 1979 World Cup, but she was not present because of the American-led boycott. This left the favorite's role to the defending champion [Bärbel Wöckel]. She came thru to defend her gold medal, winning from lane one.
