Summary

As they did every year from 1952-92, save for the boycott year of 1984, the Soviet Union won this gold medal quite easily. Romania placed second, but was not close, although they were led by the individual champion Nadia Comăneci. Romania had previously only won a medal in this event in 1956 and 1960, a bronze both times, but they would soon challenge the Soviet supremacy in women’s gymnastics.
