Summary

Olympic wrestling in this era did not seed the wrestlers, which led to the unusual scenario in 1972 middleweight Greco when the 1970 World Champion, Anatoly Nazarenko, and the 1971 World Champion, Csaba Hegedűs, met in the first round. Hegedűs won that match by decision and that was that for the gold and silver medals, as both wrestlers won the remainder of their matches. The bronze medal went to Yugoslav Croat Milan Nenadić, the 1969-70 European Champion. Nazarenko would go on to win the 1974-75 World Championships and the 1974 Europeans. Hegedűs would compete at the 1976 Olympics, with little success, but would win the 1977 European title.
