Summary

The 1969 and 1971 World Champion was Rustem Kazakov and he was favored. It took seven rounds to eliminate all but two wrestlers, with Kazakov meeting German favorite Hans-Jürgen Veil for the title. Kazakov had little trouble, throwing Veil in 2:58 to win the gold medal, as expected. He defending gold medalist was Hungarian [János Varga], who was eliminated in the seventh round, and placed fourth, just behind Finn Risto Björlin, the 1969 European Champion.

Kazakov won another World title in 1973 but retired in 1975. Veil never appeared on the podium at any other major international tournament. Björlin was competing in his third Olympics, winning his first medal.
