Since 1952, Hungary and the Soviet Union had alternated winning the gold medal in team pentathlon – Hungary in 1952, 1960, and 1968, and the USSR in 1956, 1964, and 1972. Hungary finished second, led by the individual gold medalist, András Balczó.
