With the Games held in Germany for the second time, handball was returned to the Olympics. At its 1965 session, the IOC admitted the indoor variant of the sport for the 1972 Olympics. The field version, which had been played at the 1936 Games and demonstrated at the 1952 Olympics, was all but dead by that time; the final World Championships in the sport were held in 1966.
