Archery returned to the Olympic Program for the first time since 1920 with a men’s and women’s individual event. Archery had continued to be an international sport during the 1920-72 period with multiple international competitions, including World Championships. In addition the sport had been contested at the Paralympics since 1960.

The 1972 archery events were held at the [Bogenschießanlage, Englischer Garten], or in English, the Archery Range at the English Garden in München. This was a temporary venue constructed at the English Garden specifically for the archery events of the 1972 Olympics. No other events were contested there.
