Summary

The defending gold medalist was Yugoslav Branislav Simić but he had done little since 1964. In fact, of the major titles since 1964, nobody had dominated, with multiple wrestlers winning medals, so it was difficult to choose a favorite. After five rounds four wrestlers remained – Simić, 1964 bronze medalist East German Lothar Metz; Soviet Valentin Olenik, the 1966 World Champion; and Romanian Nicolae Neguţ, who had already competed in freestyle in Mexico City, but as a light-heavyweight. In round six Simić drew with Olenik, which eliminated Olenik. Metz defeated Neguţ on points, which eliminated Neguţ. Simić and Metz had drawn in round five, but Metz won the gold medal based on fewer bad points, Olenik taking silver and Simić bronze.
