Venue(s): Ice Rink of the Insurgents, Ciudad de México
Date Started: October 17, 1968
Date Finished: October 20, 1968
Format: Scoring by negative points, with negative points given for any result short of a fall. Accumulation of 6 negative points eliminated the wrestler. When three or fewer wrestlers remained, they advanced to a final round, with preliminary results carried forward.

Gold: IRI Abdullah Movahed
Silver: BUL Enyu Valchev
Bronze: MGL Danzandarjaagiin Sereeter

Despite the presence of defending gold medalist Enyu Valchev of Bulgaria, also the 1968 European Champion, Iran’s Abdullah Movahed was an overwhelming favorite. He had been World Champion in 1965-67, and had not lost a match since the 1964 Olympics. After six rounds only Movahed and Valchev remained in the competition and they wrestled for the gold medal, Movahed winning by decision in a closely fought bout. Movahed, known for his technical prowess, would go on to win the World Championships in 1969-70, and he would compete in this class at the 1972 Olympics, but withdrew injured after his first round match. The fourth-place finisher in Mexico City, Wayne Wells, went on to win a gold medal as a welterweight at München in 1972.
