Summary

Despite the presence of defending gold medalist [Enyu Valchev] of Bulgaria, also the 1968 European Champion, Iran’s [Abdullah Movahed] was an overwhelming favorite. He had been World Champion in 1965-67, and had not lost a match since the 1964 Olympics. After six rounds only Movahed and Valchev remained in the competition and they wrestled for the gold medal, Movahed winning by decision in a closely fought bout. Movahed, known for his technical prowess, would go on to win the World Championships in 1969-70, and he would compete in this class at the 1972 Olympics, but withdrew injured after his first round match. The fourth-place finisher in Mexico City, [Wayne Wells], went on to win a gold medal as a welterweight at München in 1972.
