Summary

Masaaki Kaneko (JPN) had won the 1966-67 World Championships and came in as the favorite. He made the final round along with Bulgarian Enyu Todorov, the 1968 European Champion, and Iranian Shamseddin Seyyed Abbasi. Kaneko decisioned Seyyed Abbasi for the gold medal, after fighting to a draw with Todorov. Todorov took the silver and Seyyed Abbasi the bronze. Seyyed Abbasi would become World Champion in 1970 while Todorov won three consecutive European titles (1968-70). Kaneko retired from wrestling after the 1968 Olympics, never having lost internationally, also winning the 1966 Asian Games gold medal.
