Five of the six finalists were Japanese, joined by Soviet Valery Karasyov, who would place fifth. Japan finished 1-4, with the medals swept, in order, by Sawao Kato, Akinori Nakayama, and Kato’s brother, Takeshi. Nakayama would again win the silver medal in 1972 at München, after winning gold at the 1970 World Championships.
