Mexico's Ricardo Delgado won the gold medal in this class, to the delight of his hometown fans in Mexico City. Delgado won all four of his bouts by unanimous decision. In the final he fought Poland's Artur Olech, who won his second consecutive silver medal in this class. After the Olympics Delgado turned professional, winning nine of his first 10 bouts, drawing in the other, but in his final 20 fights, he lost 12 times, and retired in 1975. He never fought for a major title but in 1972 contested the Mexican flyweight crown, losing by decision to Miguel Canto.
