In the rarified air of Ciudad de México, the United States and the Netherlands broke the world record in the heats with 43.4. But the Americans had the fastest runners, led by anchor runner Wyomia Tyus, who had earlier defended her 100 metre gold medal. Despite mediocre exchanges the US won the gold medal with Tyus crossing the line five metres ahead.
