Summary

Yugoslavian Steven Horvat had won the 1963 World Championships, after finishing second in 1962 to Turkey’s Kazım Ayvaz. Ayvaz was the 1958 World Champion in welterweight and had fought at the 1960 Olympics as a middleweight, finishing fourth, but he remained at lightweight and competed in this class at Tokyo. There were six wrestlers left after four rounds with all but Ayvaz eliminated in round five, including Horvat, giving Ayvaz the gold medal. Three wrestlers were tied after that round with 6 bad points, and they had not yet met in the tournament, necessitating a final round for the other medals. Romania’s Valeriu Bularcă defeated Soviet Davit Gvantseladze and drew with Japan’s Tokuaki Fujita to win the silver medal. Gvantseladze won the bronze by defeating Fujita by decision.
