Neither Hanahara or Kerezov were well known, but they both defeated Pîrvulescu and Hanahara decisioned Kerezov to win the gold medal. Fourth-place went to Italy’s Ignazio Fabra, who had won the silver medal in the class in 1952 and 1956, and tied for fifth in 1960.
