Summary

The last two World Champions were Japan’s Masamitsu Ichiguchi (1962), and Hungarian [János Varga] (1963). They were both in Tokyo along with the Roma silver medalist, Ion Cernea of Romania. Ichiguchi led after rounds one, three, and four, with Czechoslovak Jiří Švec leading after round two. Varga struggled and was eliminated after losing to Ichiguchi in round three. When Ichiguchi defeated Švec in round five, he had the gold medal. The other match in that round was Cernea against Soviet Vladlen Trostianskiy, which Trostianskiy won to secure the silver. Cernea won the bronze medal based on his third-round decision over Švec. Cernea would later win the 1966 World Championships, while Varga won the gold medal at Mexico City in 1968 and repeated as World Champion in 1970.
