Eighteen teams of six gymnasts entered this event, with the best five scores counting for the team total, but only Japan and the Soviet Union were considered to have a shot at gold. Japan had won the event in 1960 at Rome and at the 1962 World Championships, while the Soviet Union at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics. Japan won the gold medal quite easily with the Soviets taking silver, and a combined German team winning bronze. Japan won the team gold medal at every Olympics from 1960-76, with the Soviets second each time, losing out only in 1980 when their nation did not compete at Moscow.
