Summary

As in 1960, the best six gymnasts in the individual all-around advanced to the apparatus final. The final apparatus score was made up of 50% of the all-around total and a final optional program. Soviet Borys Shakhlin had the highest qualifying score and tied for the best final round score with Yugoslav Miroslav Cerar, which brought Shakhlin the gold medal. Cerar won the bronze, trailing Shakhlin’s teammate Yury Titov. Titov had also been the silver medalist at Melbourne in 1956. Japan’s [Takashi Ono] had won the gold medal in both 1956 and 1960, and was the 1962 World Champion, but a poor final round routine dropped him to sixth, and last, place among the finalists.
