Summary

This event was won easily by Aleksey Gushchin (URS), who shot 560, winning by eight points. He had been the silver medalist at the 1958 World Championships. Makhmud Umarov of the Soviet Union won the silver medal, as he had in 1956, after a barrage with Japan’s Yoshihisa Yoshikawa, winning that 26-20. The fourth-place finisher was Torsten Ullman, who had won the gold medal in the event in 1936, and whose Olympic record lasted until the Rome Games. He had also been World Champion in 1933, 1935, 1939, 1947, 1952, and 1954.
