Athletics at the 1960 Roma Summer Games:

Rink Babka won the US Olympic Trials but Al Oerter was a slight favorite. He had been AAU Champion in 1957, 1959, and 1960, and had not lost in two years prior to the Trials. However, in August Babka broke the world record with 59.91 (196-6¾). In round one, Babka led with 58.02 and Oerter was second with 57.64 (189-1¼). For Babka that was it – he would not improve that mark. Oerter could not get ahead either, until the fifth round. Finally, he then produced a 59.18 (194-2) toss which won him his second gold medal. In third, Dick Cochran completed another US sweep.
