Like the other Canadian events, the C1 1,000 m had a very small number of competitors, as just six boats started in the final. Among them were the 1934 European Champion, Erich Koschik of Germany, and Bohuslav Karlík, who had medalled at the 1933 and 1934 Europeans. Also entered was Canada's Frank Amyot. A manifold national champion in canoeing races since the early 1920s, Amyot was the team leader of the Canadian canoeing team. Prior to the Olympics, his primary concern had been fundraising, as the Canadian Olympic Committee and canoeing federation did not provide any money for their trip. Amyot turned out to be the class of the field, keeping the rest of the field at several lengths. Behind him, the battle for the medals was fairly close, with Karlík eventually getting the better of Koschik.
